PAINTING TIPS / TUTORIALS

On Values
~ Paintings are usually expressed in three values (dark, middle and light) and on three planes: foreground, middle ground and background.
~ Each plane should be
dominated by a single value (dark, middle or light).
~ Different colors (hues) offer a different
range of values. To understand this difference make test swatches to see what range of values is associated with a given color.

Recycle opportunity for watercolorists!
~ Plastic political campaign signs are generally discarded and go directly into the landfill, contributing tons of non-biodegradable waste.  However, they make wonderful surfaces to use for watercolor painting! At the end of an election day, check out areas with signs still standing, or around dumpsters near polling places. When you get them home, remove the wooden or plastic sign support, and voilà! You now have a great water-resistant surface to which to tape your watercolor paper!
